New Zealand Visa Updates: What Skilled Migrants Need to Know in 2026

New Zealand has introduced important changes to its skilled migration system, with several updates taking effect from 24 August 2026. The changes are particularly relevant for skilled workers, tradespeople, technicians and professionals considering New Zealand as a destination for work and residence.

New pathways for skilled workers

New Zealand has confirmed new Skilled Migrant Category pathways, including a Trades and Technician pathway. Eligible applicants generally need a relevant Level 4 or higher qualification, at least four years of directly relevant post-qualification experience, and the required period of skilled work experience in New Zealand.

The country has also introduced clearer rules for occupations on its red and amber lists. These lists affect which residence pathways may be available for certain occupations, so applicants should check their occupation carefully before making plans.

Changes to wage and qualification requirements

The updated Skilled Migrant Category rules simplify some wage settings. Applicants generally need to meet the applicable median-wage requirement for their pathway when they begin their qualifying skilled work and maintain the required rate when applying for residence.

There are also updated qualification rules, including changes to how overseas qualifications are assessed and how points are awarded for certain New Zealand qualifications. English-language test validity has also been extended to five years for some applicants with recognised occupational registration.

Visitor visa application changes

There is also an upcoming change for visitors. From 24 September 2026, new applications for most visitor visas will need to be submitted through New Zealand's enhanced Immigration Online system rather than the old application system. Existing submitted applications are not required to be resubmitted.
